Illustration Friday: Green

Although I love the color green and literally surround myself with it, I just realized that somehow I don't paint with it very much - go figure! Here's a painting I made of Peau d' Ane (Donkeyskin), from the French fairy tale:

Illustration Friday: Hide

So who's hiding under there?
This was my take on the tale of the princess and the pea. I had a lot of fun painting it in my garden last summer; I really enjoyed playing with colors, textures and patterns.

Illustration Friday: Crash

Whatever mischief these little guys were up to, it definitely crashed and burnt! Now, they're in trouble...

I had a lot of fun making this piece this weekend. A friend gave me a new set of paints for Christmas and I tried them out; these are colors that I don't normally use, but I like how they turned out.
Thanks Marjo :)

Illustration Friday: Sprout

I painted this after my cat Arthur died, during one of my Pixies phases. I was sad and listening to Doolittle over and over, because it's surreal and funny and dark, and I wish I had the pipes to let it rip like Frank when I'm mad at the world. Here's to my monkey gone to heaven!

On another note, I was feeling decidedly green and sprouty today, so I made this tiny doodle on the back of a matchbox.

Illustration Friday: Superhero

When I was little, I was fascinated with the Chinese legend of the Monkey King.
He's a superhero of sorts!
Here he is, stealing empress Xi Wangmu's peach of immortality...

Illustration Friday: Help

The one needing help might not be who you think...

My December show got a little write-up in Where magazine! Ok, not the New Yorker... but still, my first write-up so it's exciting to me!

Illustration Friday: Thanksgiving

When I was a little kid, I had a pet duck that my grandmother would regularly threaten to roast. Which in hindsight was kind of a fucked up thing to do.
Thankfully, she never carried out her threat.

Hey, look at that! I almost stayed within the theme :)

Illustration Friday: Clear

Really, someone should have cleared out that closet!

In other news, whoohoo! Check it out, I'm in NY Arts Magazine! (Okay, it's just a teensy listing but still it made my day...)

Illustration Friday: Smoke

This is an older painting, and I guess it is a little sad.

The original title was Pandora's Box; it is about childhood gone up in smoke along with the long-gone people, pets and toys that were loved back then. It is about the events you can't rewind and the innocence you can't ever get back.

Hmm, I guess the Seattle rain is making me gloomy today :-)

Illustration Friday: Quiet

This little girl most certainly got the message that children should be seen but not heard...
